🌈 Top Ten Songs inspired by Books/Film Adaptions 🌈

Yeah, it’s a bit of a mouthful sorry! I’ve never been great at titles. When I first read this TTT, I balked a bit as I don’t really associate music and books in my mind. I love books and music individually  but while I’m a pretty good reader, my musical talents leave a lot to be desired. Eventually, I did manage to find a link between the two and I’ve come to the conclusion more songs should be based on books. Go make it happen music people!

The Jungle Book Soundtrack

This is one of the best Disney soundtracks out there. Really, there isn’t a bad song. My personal favourite ‘I Wanna  be Like You’ has me bopping along and I think Baloo is absolutely hilarious at the end.

Bright Eyes

I have a love/hate relationship with ‘Bright Eyes.’ If you’ve seen the Watership Down film, you know it’s pretty harrowing and I LOVED little bunnies as a kid. My brother and father used to sing this song at me to tease me because they knew I’d get upset thinking about bunny deaths (tchh, boys!) I finally read Watership Down last year and the song encapsulates the heartbreak, the hope and fragility of life in the warren.

Lovefool

Ahhh, love sick teenagers! This song captures it so well. I adored the Romeo + Juliet as a child and of course, the play is incredible. It holds a special place for me as it’s one of the first of Shakespeare’s that I read/studied in school; the beginning of a love affair with Mr.S.

Walking in the Air

The Snowman is a family tradition at our house at Christmas (as I expect it is in most British households) and it always ends with someone bawling. If you haven’t seen it, stop what you’re doing and go watch it now (I’ll wait.) The film has beautiful music throughout but as a ‘silent movie’ the first words we hear uttered are in this song. And what a song! It’s so full of imagination and joy and all things wonderful about being a child. Just magical.

Wuthering Heights

My mum used to play this on cassette (lol) in our car and I liked listening to it for one reason; it had my name in it. But, in time, I realised how fantastic Kate Bush is and realised I liked the song for reasons other than my name. I think the song, and Kate Bush, are a lot like Wuthering Heights, the novel. It’s highly divisive. Many people can’t stand it and others wax lyrical about it. It’s difficult to come at and is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. It’s raw and mystical and makes you listen and think about things you’ve never really thought about. Their innovation and artistic bravery is why I consider them one of my favourite authors and musicians.
